Introduction

Nathan S. Persell, DMD, MS

Orthodontist · Board Certified, American Board of Orthodontics

The first thing you may want to ask Dr. Persell is “how tall are you?” or maybe “where’d you get those funny socks?”. However, the question you should ask Dr. Persell is “why should you be my orthodontist?”. We could attempt to answer that question here with a long list of boring (but important!) credentials. But we promise that once you meet him, his warm chairside manner, patient-focused approach, and occasionally funny (at least he thinks so) sense of humor will answer that question for you.

Dr. Nathan Persell is a proud husband and father of three, Nebraska native, and military veteran. As a board-certified orthodontist he has a passion for crafting confident and healthy smiles, serving others, and helping children appreciate the finer points of tooth brushing and wearing their retainers.

Nebraska roots & education

After growing up in Lincoln, Nebraska, Dr. Persell attended Nebraska Wesleyan University and was selected for the U.S. Army Health Professions Scholarship Program. He earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) from A.T. Still University Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health before beginning his military career.

Army career

During his first year in the Army, Dr. Persell completed a 12-month Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency. In the years that followed, his military career took him across the United States and Europe to multiple duty stations. He earned Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry and had the honor of providing care to service members and their families. He then attended the Tri-Service Orthodontic Residency Program in San Antonio, Texas, earning his Master of Science degree and advanced Orthodontic specialty training. He then served as Chief of Orthodontics at Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston.

So yes, he has the credentials and experience. He has advanced orthodontic education and training. But don’t underestimate how much his military background taught him about leadership, precision, and staying calm under pressure – skills that happen to be pretty useful when a nervous 8 year old is sitting in your chair and you’re about to tell them they need to wear rubber bands.

Orthodontic specialty

As a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, Dr. Persell has achieved the highest level of certification in the specialty of orthodontics, which only about 30% of all orthodontists achieve. He stays current with advances in orthodontic technology and treatment, including modern braces and clear aligner therapy, while keeping the focus where it belongs: on the individual patient.

Family life

He may be a board-certified orthodontist, but at home, he's simply Dad—and always outnumbered. Dr. Persell spends most of his time alongside his college sweetheart and wife of 12 years, Samantha, and their three children, Adeline, Declan, and Callen. Family life keeps him busy, humble and continually learning lessons that no dental school, orthodontic residency, or military training could have prepared him for.

When he isn’t working, you’ll likely find the Persell family exploring Lincoln's parks and trails, cooking elaborate meals together (which the children subsequently refuse to eat), traveling, seeking out adventures, or simply attempting to keep everyone fed, entertained, and reasonably on schedule.

Coming home

After 15 years of serving patients around the country and overseas, Dr. Persell feels incredibly fortunate to now practice orthodontics in the community where he grew up. Coming home means more than returning to the place where he was raised – it means being part of the community where he and his family now get to raise their own children.

He's excited to build lasting relationships with Nebraska families and hopefully make the orthodontic experience a little more fun along the way. Because at the end of the day, Dr. Persell believes everyone deserves a healthy, confident smile, and beyond that, orthodontics has never been just about moving teeth. It's about getting to know patients, earning their trust, celebrating their progress, and watching their confidence grow right along with their smiles.
